About
I received my BA and MPhil degrees in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge and my DPhil in Philosophy from the University of Oxford. In my DPhil thesis I argued that throughout his works Nietzsche is concerned with constructing a persuasive theodicy, which reconciles not the existence of God with evil as per a traditional theistic theodicy, but the existence and the inevitability of suffering with the affirmation of life. Following completion of my DPhil, I worked at Birkbeck College, London for two years before returning to Oxford to take up a Junior Research Fellowship in Philosophy at Worcester College and then a College Lectureship at St Hugh's College. In 2013 I was appointed to a permanent lectureship in Philosophy at the University of Hull. From September 2017, I will be Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Lincoln.
I am the editor of Nietzsche on Art and Life (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014). This collection of new essays brings together a number of distinguished figures in contemporary Anglo-American Nietzsche scholarship to examine Nietzsche's views on art and the aesthetic in the context of his wider practical-existential concerns. Reviews were recently published here and here.
In 2014 two colleagues (Stephen Burwood and Alexander Ornella) and I were awarded a research grant by the University of California, Riverside (in association with the John Templeton Foundation). The aim of the project is to investigate philosophical questions pertaining to immortality and radical life extension. The project website is here.
I am the founder and organiser of the Lincoln Philosophy Salon, which holds monthly talks for a general audience from leading professional philosophers. Past and upcoming speakers include Angie Hobbs, A.C. Grayling, Jimmy Lenman, David Papineau, and Nancy Cartwright.
I am a reviewer for Oxford University Press, Routledge, Blackwell, University of Chicago Press, Macmillan, Acumen, Peter Lang, British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Mind, Journal of the History of Philosophy, European Journal of Philosophy, Journal of Nietzsche Studies, Journal of Value Inquiry, and Journal of Philosophical Research.
I am a member of the steering committee of the International Research Network of the Schopenhauer-Gesellschaft.
I am also a classically trained guitarist and have my own Soundcloud channel.
